Rotation in mobile proxies is the process of automatically or manually changing the IP address provided by the proxy server. This is especially important in the context of mobile proxies, because the IP addresses they use belong to mobile network operators (such as MTS, Beeline, MegaFon, etc.) and are considered more “trusted” than standard data center IPs.

How rotation works in mobile proxies:

  • Automatic rotation: The IP address changes at a set time interval, for example, every 5, 10, or 15 minutes.
  • Via API request: You can send a special request (e.g., through a URL or control panel command) to manually change the IP address.

How to choose a rotation strategy

There is no universal IP change interval: the strategy should match the task and the lifetime of an authenticated session.

Session-based rotation

One IP is retained for the lifetime of one session or account. This approach suits social networks and advertising accounts, where an address change during authentication may look unusual.

Time-based rotation

The address changes after a configured interval. This option is used for scraping and monitoring, with an interval chosen so it does not interrupt an active session.

On-demand rotation

The user triggers an IP change manually, through a URL, or through an API. This is useful for testing and cases where the moment of the address change must be controlled explicitly.

What to consider about protocols and sessions

The protocol affects connections, authentication, and session persistence. Automation workflows should account for the differences between HTTP, HTTPS, and SOCKS and coordinate IP changes with the logic of the application or browser.

Common configuration mistakes include:

  • rotating IPs too frequently;
  • changing the address in the middle of an active session;
  • using multiple accounts through one address without separating sessions;
  • not keeping an IP assigned for the session when persistence is required.

Even a mobile IP cannot compensate for a rotation strategy that does not match the task.

How traffic passes through a mobile gateway

In a common setup, a smartphone, modem, or router with a SIM card acts as the gateway. The request passes through that device, and the website sees an outgoing address from the mobile carrier. The exact method and available IP change intervals depend on the provider's implementation.

How mobile, residential, and datacenter proxies differ

  • Datacenter proxies use addresses assigned to hosting providers and data centers.
  • Residential proxies use addresses assigned to home internet connections.
  • Mobile proxies route traffic through a carrier network; shared subscriber addressing and available rotation distinguish them from the other two types.
